Buddy doesn’t get the credit he deserves for the music he shepherded into existence. HIs 66 to 86 book It’s like the culmination Kenton, Basie, Ellington and all the other great jazz bands that preceded it. Just as he pushed his side men to their limits, he seemed to manage to inspire a special greatness in the men who wrote for him. When I was in high school all state band.. many many years ago, we played the first part of the Piece of the Road Suite. First time we played it down, I was so awestruck at the sound of the inner voices all around me. It’s hard to even begin to appreciate this music in a recording. And, sadly, so hard to find an opportunity to hear it played live.
