Today we are exploring a question that one of our LingoRoo Troop members sent to us. What is Auditory Processing Disorder? How is it similar, or different than, Receptive Language difficulties? I’m 28 and was diagnosed as a young kid, my kinder teacher noticed something was going on so my amazing single parent mum, did everything she could do for me. while my dad chooses to ignore it still till this day, which still hurts.
Any new parent/s here, Welcome!
Be patient with us, learn everything you can and keep up to date with all the new studies around it. Technology is a great tool!
Find a support group.
Find what could work for them and try it.
Ask your child what would help them more/less
Make learning fun and get creative.
Let them rest when they clearly need it. (brains are over working and heating up in here)
And lastly take it day by day.

This video is helping me understand this more. My 7 year old has always gotten super frustrated/overwhelmed with school (homeschool 3 years) thought it was a heart/attitude issue but now wondering if it’s some sort of processing order or something else. She’s incredibly smart (1st grade and grade 2-3 reading level) and extremely creative when drawing.

Hi! Audiologist here! Thanks for the video, it is a lot of good information. I do have a couple of things that I would like to point out.
2. There are therapies out there can help with APD other than FM systems and modifying environment. Again, some of these therapies can be hard to find because not too many people are doing this work but it is possible. There is in person therapies (Buffalo model intervention) and online programs (CAPDOTS, Fastforward, Zoocaper-skyscraper and several more). FM systems can be great but it is often used as a bandage for the problem. Yes, it will help in an educational environment but it won't help in the real world.
3. If you are interested in learning more about these things, there is a great group called IGAPS (international guild of auditory processing specialists). There are several resources for education in this topic. We tend to be a very open group and our passion is APD!

“There’s no tiny speaker inside your brain that relays messages from the outside, ” explains neurologist Martin Kutscher, M.D., author of ADHD – Living without Brakes. “What you think you ‘hear’ is a virtual-reality recreation of sounds that stopped at your eardrum and, from there on, exist as soundless electrical impulses.”

Here’s what happens in an exchange between speaker and listener:

The speaker’s vocal cords produce a sequence of vibrations that travel invisibly through the air and land on the recipient’s eardrums.
The listener’s eardrums vibrate, causing movement of three tiny bones that, in turn, stimulate the cochlear nerve. This is essentially where “sound” ends.
From this point, what the listener thinks he “hears” is actually a series of silent electrical stimuli carried by neuronal wires.
“The brain processes these electrical impulses into sounds, then into words, and then into meaningful sentences and ideas, ” Kutscher says. “Most of us do it effortlessly. Some adults have problems in converting these electrical neuronal impulses into meaning. We call these problems Central Auditory Processing Disorders.

Hi my 4yr son sometimes repeat the questions and sometimes give a answer the question and he speaks sometimes the sentences when he saw the cartoon or rhyming a poems he knows so many poems and he also try to rhymes his own poem like johnny joney yes mumma then he working like writing alphabet then he says writing a alphabet no mumma whole poem, but he has no communicate normal conversation but if he want 🍎 then he says I want apple, he also ask can i take an apple, so what can I do to my child to increase to normal conversation please help me

my child seemed to have all the symptoms but I never knew about APD. Hes 12 now and having difficulty in all areas, workingnwith achool trams for the last 3 years and just recently he was assessed for an IEP. Just got tested by the school psychologist and for academics. He came as normal IQ cognitively and slightly higher for academics but psychologist was able to confirm auditory deficit. He was referred to speech testing by the school speech pathologist to se if he qualifies for any services. Do i need to take him to his pediatrician to get a referral for an audiologist or is the SP from the school enough? Can i request an audiologist instead?
