Again, I was extremely lucky to have gotten a first look at them a few weeks ago at Meta HQ. This is my first impression, and my own personal experience with them.
Before diving into the key features, I want to take a moment to applaud the brilliant engineers at Meta’s Reality Labs for bringing this remarkable invention to life. Orion is the result of breakthrough inventions in nearly every field of modern computing. Orion is packed with revolutionary new technologies. It features the most advanced AR display ever created, and custom silicon that delivers incredibly powerful AR experiences—all in a standalone pair of glasses. And it does this while using just a fraction of the power and weight you'd expect from a traditional headset or smartphone. They basically found a way to put all of this (show v1 of headset) into a pair of small lightweight glasses. It’s a testament to the brilliance of humans and what we are capable of creating. Orion is a true glimpse into the future of how we interact with the digital world. It’s a huge step forward in allowing people to be more present in their day to day lives, minimizing the need to look down, and without sacrificing connection. For the first time, it feels like we’re on the verge of a future where we won’t need to carry our phones anymore. We’ve entered a new era of technology, leaving behind the old, traditional ways of interacting with computers and smartphones. They’ve found a way to completely eliminate the need for remotes, keyboards, or even tapping on a screen. This is a breakthrough that changes everything about how we communicate with technology. It’s more intuitive, more seamless—just like it should be. And Orion comes together at almost a nearly perfect moment, where advancements in AI have significantly contributed to its success.
Ok so let's get started:
Let’s start off with “Reimagined Experiences”: New AR experiences designed to help people stay present, connected and empowered. Everything from taking a virtual call, to checking your email or scrolling on instagram is easily doable on the orion. I was able to witness the first ever facetime call, when Roberto successfully dialed his wife and daughter. What's really different from traditional headsets is shared AR experiences that allow you to collaborate and even compete with others. That’s Roberto playing ping pong against Zuck. I won't reveal who won but let’s just say these two guys have unfinished business. Unlike traditional headsets where you are isolated, these experiences allow you to really stay present. No running into walls.
And how is all this possible:
The Tech:
● Let's start off with the Breakthrough Materials: Orion is stacked with Silicon carbide instead of glass lenses, offering a high index of refraction. You can clearly see the eyes of anyone wearing them.
The frames are made of magnesium alloy because of it’s lightweight and rigid material that efficiently conducts away heat -- the same properties used in F1 race cars. Also extremely durable, and at the same time keeping the weight to only 98 grams. which is very close to the average weight of normal sunglasses.
● Advanced Waveguides: It has these Nano-scale 3D structures that diffract light for a wide field of view. 72 Degree field of view.
● Lets move on to the Projectors: The Ultra LEDS provide small, power-efficient display projection technology. Again these are so tiny, and even after inspecting them thoroughly I honestly could not see exactly where they were located.
● Custom Silicon designed specifically to be Optimized for AI, machine perception, and graphics algorithms. I believe it has 20 custom silicon chips, 7 cameras, some being infrared cameras, & a bunch of microscopic sensors. Along with mirrored lenses that allows for tracking eye movements.
● EMG Neural Wristband - You might have seen this before, or at least the version that Mark teased last year. The neural wristband reads brain signals allowing for subtle hand movements to control orion. It translates brain signals and hand gestures into intuitive, hands-free control for augmented and virtual reality environments. And this is huge because it introduces Next-Generation Interactions: an Evolution from keyboards, mice, phone screens to full touchless control. And ofcourse this is all wireless and no need for implants. Orion has the most natural and seamless inputs of any consumer electronics device. It’s Trained to pickup different brain signals and differentiate from the slightest hand movements. Meta is calling them gestures. \
