Imagine two of the most iconic european teams itw like Barca and Madrid having a UCL final. That was River-Boca in the Libertadores. Just like Barca and Madrid the two biggest clubs of south america in the most prestigious club final of the region. Boca v River does not have the same difference of titles and greatness Madrid vs Barca have tho, they are way more equal in every aspect so winning this final meant a lot more. Imagine Madrid losing a final, they can still chill with their 15 ucls Barca does not have even half, but for Boca it was the Septima, equaling Independiente for 7 Libertadores, for River it was their fourth, closing the gap on International Trophies, and destroying their rivals one more time during the period of Marcelo Gallardo as a manager for the club marking the complete the resurgence of the club after the club got relegated in 2011. The most iconic match in south america´s history

As a Brazilian, Fla-Flu only gets some fame around the world because of it's catchy name. In reality though, it's not even the biggest rivalry within Rio de Janeiro (the city / state where both teams are from). The largest rivalries in Brazil are definitely (in no particular order):
GreNal: Gremio X Internacional
Corinthians X Palmeiras
Flamengo X Vasco

4:49 The rivalry was born when dissident members from AC Milan decided to found a new club which would allow foreign players in their rank, thus named “Internazionale” (international). At the time the Italian Federal Championship issued a rule which prohibited foreigners to play in the league. AC Milan adhered, causing the internal fracture. Then the rivalry assumed a “demographic” connotation, as AC Milan supporters mostly belonged to working class, while Inter Milan’s hailed from the upper class. Eventually, when the two clubs became contenders for national and european titles, the heat grew further.

You Missed NACIONAL Vs PEÑAROL the Uruguayan Classic is the Oldest One out of the British Islandan(over 500matches between them...far more than BOCA VS RIVER) and it was the first one in the whole world to reach 6 Inter continental Cups(since 1988 a long time beforee Inter/ Milan or BARCA/RM)SO IT WAS "THE REAL EL CLASICO" of the 20th Century and is still today the only one in southamerica with 6 World Championships, and it's also the only one to divide an entire nation in two halfs the same way Celtic/Rangers does it in Europe

Nacional vs Peñarol is brutal, both have 3 world championships each, and a total of 8 copa libertadores between the two. The games are always fierce, with lots of fouls and tention, and once upon a time, they were the two best teams in the world. Truly a joy to watch even today when most of the talent goes to play in europe (Darwin Nuñez, Valverde, and more from Peñarol) (Godin, Suarez, Muslera, and more from Nacional)

Here in Netherlands. The most famous one is De Klassieker between the two biggest cities.
Ajax from Amsterdam and Feyenoord from Rotterdam.
But actually in the last 30 years we also have a new derby the Nieuwe Klassieker.
Which is the nr. 1 of the country (Ajax) vs the nr. 2 which is not Feyenoord but PSV from Eindhoven.
This because PSV has been grow to a very big team and now has more titles than Feyenoord.

Btw those 3 teams i just mentioned are here called De Grote Drie. Which is because most of the time. A finale in the Eredivisie would almost always have one of these 3 or 2 of them in the finals.

We have multiple derbies here but most of them are regional.

Fun fact: Here in Netherlands there is only city which has more than 1 club. Which can say they can have a city derby. But most of the time the 2 are not really that great and most of the fans are for the biggest club instead. Its Rotterdam btw for you curious people. Feyenoord, Excelsior and Sparta.

Amsterdam does not really have another big football club. Only some amateur clubs.

What about Nottingham Forest vs Derby County, or Forest vs Notts County? These are probably the two oldest rivalries in history. Just because some of the teams aren’t very big doesn’t mean they aren’t interesting.

I’m biased, but having gone to an ASANTE KOTOKO v. ACCRA HEARTS in GHANA was the most volatile atmosphere I have ever been in. The actual Army - not National Guard was doing crowd control & security.

This was coupled with the most scandalous of transfers… very Figo-esce ahead of a title-deciding clash.

Unreal.

One thing to add to the 2003 semi-final between Inter and AC Milan: both teams have historically played in the same stadium since the 1940s. As a result, AC Milan managed to "win" on away goals even though they were literally playing *in their own stadium*
This is an interesting paradox, and a rare one, since big teams like them usually don't share stadiums
