The tips are for regular non rabid Coyote. The rabid ones don't give a damn if you're big, loud and standing your ground

If a coyote actually has rabies none of these intimidating tactics are going to work. Rabies attacks the brain and a truly rabid animal is no longer capable of thinking rationally and is going to attack anything that gets near it regardless of the consequences because the disease destroys the part of the brain responsible for fear as the disease progresses. Healthy coyotes are terrified of wolves but a rabid coyote will readily attack an entire pack of wolves regardless of the fact they will kill it. Such a case happened in Yellowstone national park several years back. Attacking other animals is exactly the diseases method of spreading.

I actually survived one. I was 8 or 9, at a neighbor's house in the summer. We lived last on a long line of cottages, so was almost deserted most of the year. Our young dog 18 months was sitting outside the front door waiting for my sister and I, then we heard a godawful scream from the dog and ran to see what happened. Luckily it was focused on chasing the dog, zoned in on it so the coyote didn't notice me. Dad was in our back yard picking some rocks with a long steel pry bar for a new flower bed. I came around the corner of the house to see our dog running towards Dad and hiding behind him, while Dad swings the bar and hits coyote right in the head, knocking it back about 10 feet and it starts to stagger away. Dad runs for the truck just as Jim our neighbor shows up with his .22 plinking gun. Jim hopped in the bed and Dad ran it down with the truck. Lost the dog, the coyote had ripped off it lower jaw, just hanging by a flap of skin, but everyone else but the coyote was ok.

I live very close to mountains and can hear coyote packs howling and yapping at night sometimes. I haven't really encountered any when I'm hiking in the mountains though. Luckily I live in a free state where I can carry and protect myself.

If a coyote is rabid, the most important parts of your body to protect are your head and neck. A bite directly to either of those places can result in a fatal case of rabies in less than a week. Sometimes less than a day.

I get them on my property all the time... I haven't seen a rabid one and I've been living here for 7 years. Still, there are times I won't let my dogs go to far. They ( 3 catahoulas) chased one down a few years back and hurt it pretty bad. Definitely made me a little worried.

Who would have thought that coyotes would become an urban concern and start raising headlines like rats? This is a growing N. America phenomenon. Recently pedestrians were not allowed to walk through Stanley Park in Vancouver because of a number of coyote attacks. This is just another symptom of a crazy-changing world and not for the better. Also a great white shark attack off the Nova Scotia coast. First recorded attack by a shark in Canadian waters in over 100 years. Rising water temperatures driving the sharks further north.
