Phrasal verbs are very important in spoken English, but not when we compose letters, essays, formal creating writing. I'd rather not to use them at all.

Germans will find this easy, they're a lot like separable verbs in German.
Important note for EFLers- the preposition is very important. Being held up is not the same as being held down, held off or held on to.
