We teach our swimmers to use a low octane freestyle technique in middle to distance events. The key to a fast low octane freestyle is leading with the elbow as you recover and extending the hand up and as far forward as possible.

The lift of the hand as it extends forward not only reduces drag but increases coupling motion as it forces the body to rotate as the hand finally enters the water.

This has been the biggest change in the low octane stroke over the past 15 years… now we see all the fastest mid to distance freestylers using this technique.

Will Wood demonstrates this technique perfectly! Good job Will!!!

right arm entry is not as good as his left. He's holding his whole arm above his body on the recovery. His right palm almost looks dorsiflexed.
