How the Hidden Debug Ending in Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 Completely Changes What We Knew

Poppy Playtime Chapter 2's ending after Mommy Long Leg's death felt kind of like a betrayal. Poppy got us on the train but then told us she wasn't done with us yet... However, this wasn't always the ending. In fact, there is a hidden debug ending where Poppy says something different. Let's talk about that.

(Random, but I wonder if Huggy Wuggy was originally a part of chapter 2?)

How do you think this dialogue would have affected the story? What's your theory?

Honestly, I think that would explain why the train ride before the crash takes so long, since the real piece of dialogue that Poppy was supposed to tell us instead of betraying us out of the blue is now missing and replaced with new shorter dialogue

Huh, this is, legitimately better than the original ending. Instead of the meh backstab, she’s forcing the player to help her free the toys. It still gives her a dark mentality, but with good intentions. I wish this was the actual ending. Great find!!

I honestly prefer this dialog, while having secrets to discover are cool. I prefer the main information just being told (many side details can be a mystery to balance it out) . It would be a nice change of pace compared to some horror games.

Even if it "gave away" more story than the devs might've intended, I like this ending way better. It feels like it respects the efforts of the player more and generates more interest in the next chapter for me as a player. The ending as it currently stands just feels like, at best, a naked hook for Chapter 3. We already knew we weren't going to escape the facility even before we started playing, so Poppy's betrayal at the end just felt meh, imo.

I like poppy being more kind hearted then seem like the villain. In the beta dialogue it sounds like that poppy is sad full of grief and shame but wants to help fix everything with the player, and she even sounds like she’s sorry when she tells you she was lying about taking you out of the factory. Stuff like this would make her Character stand out even more

the music box adds a sense of sadness and loss; That makes poppy seem more tragic as a character who endured a lot and believes that the player can stop what ever is happening. She believes in them and wants them help guide them by starting where it begin.

I really loved this ending over the other ending. She’s a lot more sympathetic with the player

I enjoyed the debug version of poppys speech way more than the one we got in the final game

Sounds interesting. The debug speech tells a lot more about the story and shows that poppy hasn't fully betrayed you. It also shows that she is linked to people dying because she is able to live as a doll, likely due to others trying to do that too.

Something I noticed, and tell me if I'm wrong, but the lines we hear from Poppy in the trailer for chapter 2 matches the debug version, rather than the ending we got in game. I wonder if they changed the ending super close to the release date.

You know when Matt Pat released a video thesis "our theories are killing games..." I can't help but feel they see how close some of the theories are and divert expectations. I way prefer these lines than in the original game.

Compared to the ending we got, she sounds more sympathetic here while in the final one, she sounds more menacing like she has been condition someway. I love her voice actress though.

When Poppy says "Being able to exist as a doll, it has killed so many people" I feel like that further confirms that the workers as well as the orphans were turned into toys and the process kept going cuz since Stella Greyber; someone who was willing to be a toy: was successfully turned into Poppy. Elliot thought it would be the same for the workers and kids.

Like how Joey Drew thought the same for his workers

It might turn into a non canon if they are the type of those game companies where if their audience predicted things correctly (in this case just finding it out), they just change it to have some sort of surprise. Matpat tackled it on "are theories killing video games".

the debug version makes it like she’s helping you instead of more betrayal so she needs your help to fix everything because were special I like this debug ending because she sounds more friendly and more of a trusted alibi

This adds more context to the story. But, I like the normal ending's obscurity, adds to the mystery if she is friend or foe, and reminds me of Circus Baby's character imo

'and i am the cause' i think that, when poppy was created as a living doll, the company wanted to replicate that, and they created monsters.

When I heard poppies dialogue I was shocked, it felt heart warming and understanding instead of the other version, but then it got me thinking, what if she wasn’t morbid in this version? I know it’s a basic thing to think of but think about it, she could of helped us more threw out the game or even share some lore, but who knows.

I wish they had merged the two endings more. Made it to where poppy said she wanted the player to help but didn't specify what and maybe said something about her being the cause of so many deaths too.

The music in the debug version even sounds more innocent and less sinister than the final.
