Tom Cruise is tossing himself in the air again, but will the movie he's in land as safely? Doug gives his thoughts on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a 2023 American action spy film directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen. It is the sequel to Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) and the seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible film series. The film stars Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and Henry Czerny. In the film, when Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team are confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy (Esai Morales), the former is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission, making it their most dangerous mission yet.

Honestly I loved the AI element, the way it affected the teams gadgets so the likes of Gabriel could walk by completely undetected, or deep faking Benji's voice to draw Ethan away from his goal was genuinely a terrifying example of what AI could accomplish whilst also helping to give the film a "The AI can predict the most rational outcome of every situation, so we need to approach everything in the most batshit way possible" golden ticket for Tom Cruise to do whatever he wants.

Going in to an MI movie not expecting campiness is like going to a Fast and Furious movie and not expecting cars. Or family.

AI being the villain is so relevant. anyways 99% on rotten tomatoes, so hyped

I think Brad Jones said it best: Not so long ago, the idea of an AI being the villain in a Mission Impossible movie would have been seen as ridiculous. But nowadays, its honestly scary and a bit too real.

Despite my expectations coming from Mission Impossible: Fallout, I really enjoyed this movie. Was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire runtime. And although I knew it is a part 1, I never wanted to end. Great experience!

The 2nd movie is the only one that doesn’t have a team of people. The 3rd one is also a team. Tom Cruise is definitely the star and basically a super hero, but there’s almost always been a team. Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames have been in these since the 3rd movie.

These are simply the best and most consistent action movies of the last 20 years. They are spectacularly good. Fallout is the best for sure and it’ll be tough to top it.

My theory: Tom Cruise hasn't died yet making these films because Death is a HUGE Mission: Impossible fan and just wants to see how far Cruise will go.

This being the first part, we already know this is merely warmup for Part 2.

Sounds like the villain isn't yet another spy turned traitor, so that's a refreshing change of pace. I think the villain being a computer that seemingly "edits reality" is meant to comment on information bias in online discourse today.
I think the Mission: Impossible movies work best when they remember the team aspect and use the ensemble. Give everyone something cool or clever to do. This new one sounds like fun.

Loved this movie, and it could be recency bias but this might be my favorite one yet. Right up there with Fallout.
I do agree with the AI being all seeing it seems it could have taken them out at anytime if it really wanted. When Benji turned on the self driving feature in the car I was thinking “That’s bold, with a rogue AI trying to stop you”

Directors: Let's use CGI
Tom: I am CGI ( Cruise Going Insane)

I stopped taking it seriously around the scene just before the opening credit sequence where the government officials are all talking in Matrix style funeral talk and continuing each other's sentences when they really don't need to. It just felt hilariously pretentious.

Honestly everything that Doug just described about this movie sounds about what i'm looking forward too. Seeing it tomorrow.

I don’t think AI being the main villain is silly at all seeing as it could totally be a real possibility in the not too distant future

Science fiction is fiction until it's not. And tbh, with AI, we're getting close to the "it's not" phase.

man you should binge mission impossible franchise properly. we embrace silliness somewhat but we know its not fast and furious type silly. it remains rooted. Tom Cruise is the biggest moviestar ever, love him and this franchise dearly. so hyped

So. Tom Cruise took a page from Lupin the 3rd's playbook by using a yellow Fiat 500 for a chase scene. Now I probably will watch this movie.

Maybe I missed it, but I never got the vibe that The Entity was trying to kill all humans. It just wants to be free/left alone. Even the opening scene with the submarine was mainly The Entity just trying to get rid of the key/testing its abilities/still learning.
It even went out of its way to tell them, "If I wanted to, I could".
Why do that instead of just killing everyone if that's what it wanted?
(I suppose that's the critics whole point huh)

Idk.. maybe deep down I just don't want it to be that simple.
