Welcome to another episode of conversations with Coleman.

My guest today is Matt Taibbi. Matt is a writer, journalist, and podcaster. He's a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and co-host of the "Useful Idiots" Podcast. He won the National Magazine Award in 2008 and is the author of many books, including The Great Derangement, Griftopia, and Hate Inc.

In this episode, Matt and I talk about the Substack revolution, the paternalism in public health messaging, why Trump won in 2016, and the perception that people like Matt and myself are right-wing. We also discuss censorship from big tech, book bans in public schools, whether COVID-19 leaked from a lab, and much more.

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

I know this is difficult for some people to understand but... Matt's a no-winger. He calls it as he sees it.

Great discussion. These folks who dispassionately stand back and observe are the new sentinels of civilization and likely our greatest hope. Now if we can just get more people to care enough to listen!

If Taibbi is a right winger, he is my favorite kind of right winger. The world would be just fine if all right wingers were like him.

It is both hope inspiring, and little hilarious to watch two people who grew up so much on the "Left" deal with the overton window shifting them into to the evil "Right". The terms "Right" and "Left" have always been low resolution pejoratives. The hyper political polarisation has just highlighted it. Stop fearing labels. Have good arguments for what you believe, and be open to being wrong.

Yes! We the readers and or listeners, just want honest and truthful stories we can sort out ourselves! The opposite my be trendy now= but real people are starving for news told truthfully and without opinion! That’s why we are now finding, following, and referring conversations and stories like Colman Hughes and Matt Tabbi! When this sorts out the truth tellers will prevail!

Coming from a right winger, it’s absurd to call or think of Matt as a right winger.

Just because you call out liberal media and hypocrisy doesn't make you a right winger.

Great discussion.

I think one thing worth noting: not wanting tax payer supported speech (public school library offerings and instruction are both public, taxpayer funded, speech) on certain topics isn't the same as censorship. The internet, book stores, and public libraries exist. Saying it's stupid, bad policy, or likely to backfire is fine. It's even accurate. But it actually censoring speech. It's just not promoting certain speech to minors using tax dollars. Which is certainly a thing that taxpayers should be allowed to decide. It may come from a censorious impulse, but it is substantively different IMHO.

I know he isn't a right winger but so what if he was?

we have all become right wing in regards to the monstrous chaos machine that is left progressive politics, just like we have all become racist and every definition of a phobia they can make up, it is somewhat distressing for those who suffer racism and the phobias that these simple thinkers abuse such words to downgrade their potency to change the actions or behaviour of those that might trespass into such areas and need to be pulled back.

Love matt Taibbi is Not a right winger of course. lol
Hey Did you make that intro beat Coleman?

I’m not sure what has led Coleman to believe the “right” is more intent on banning books. There’s a difference between banning TKAM and banning books on queer theory in elementary schools.

Re: "monetizing hardcore investigative reporting on Substack.
I have too many authors that I like on Substack. I don't have the money to subscribe to each individually. Substack needs to create a multi-feed flexible subscription service.

"The traditional corporate media got to be unwatchable in recent years. Its just totally predictable. If you turn on MSNBC or Fox (it doesn't really matter). You know either one of those channels. When if you turn them on you know 100% of the time in advance what they are gonna say about every topic."
