This summer, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga attended the 2017 US Ignite Application Summit in Austin, Texas. At the conference, the research team led by Mina Sartipi shared their project related to autonomous vehicles with conference attendees. At UTC, researchers are working on large-scale fleet management and coordination in extreme and complex urban driving scenarios. To ensure safety at all times, autonomous vehicles must incorporate substantial situational awareness by taking advantage of real-time data from the transportation infrastructure or other vehicles. This project is being conducted as part of the US Ignite Smart Gigabit Communities program. Funded via a three-year, $6 million grant from the National Science Foundation, SGC creates a network of cities each employing a common approach to foster a gigabit application ecosystem.
