Sons de Carrilhões - João Pernambuco | Guitar Performance | Jonathan Richter

Показать описание
Brazilian musician and composer João Pernambuco (1883 - 1947) is not as widely known as other composers from that time period. However, his piece Sons de Carrilhões (Sound of the Bells) is considered his most iconic pieces and is popular among guitarists around the world.
Sons de Carrilhões is a Chôro, which is an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre that originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro. Although the term Chôro means "cry" or "lament", most are surprisingly happy (played in a major key), and upbeat! Chôros are full of syncopation, counterpoint, swooping melodic lines, and robust chords. All of these elements can of course be heard in Pernambuco's Sons de Carrilhões!
Many performers take certain liberties with the rhythm of this piece, especially in regards to the accompaniment. These interpretations can be tasteful and entertaining for sure! In this performance, I've aimed for a more metrically consistent approach while focusing strongly bringing out a clear melody line. That being said, I could easily record this piece 100 times and still find new ways to incorporate swing and rhythmic intrigue!
