You can safely skip shift gears depending on engine speed and vehicle speed.
Truck drivers do it all the time they even float the gears lol

1. Don't downshift two gears down if the speed won't match the gear. Otherwise you're calling for disaster. E.g: when you're traveling at 140kph, don't downshift to 3rd(especially if you have a small engine).

2. When you wanna skip a gear on an upshift, make sure that speed of the car will match the gear so that you don't lose power.
