Welcome to the first installment of my brand new series, Explaining Horrors. In this series I will be explaining a variety of different ghouls, ghosts, villains, creatures and the like from various forms of horror media in great detail. This includes origin stories, abilities, personalities and even a kill count. Today we are discussing 2 characters from horror mangaka Junji Ito that don't get a lot of love. That being Yuuma & Chizumi Azawa from the Dissolving Series. Enjoy.

I can imagine Junji Ito making the bro‘s excessive apologising as a critique on Japanese heavy emphasis on excessive unnecessary etiquette.

if he's just a masochist who summons his parents back purely to hurt him physically, maybe the apologies and compliments are a way of hurting himself mentally

I love how the phrase "Listening to him will melt your brain" was turned into a literal concept.
Also notice how the sibling contrast. Yuuma is polite, handsome and well mannered on the outside yet is ALWAYS the one actively committing the crime while lying through his teeth.
His unruly sister always tells the truth and never hurt anyone, in the comic anyway.

Probably unpopular but i really like the sister. Sounds like shes a metaphore for rude people who are good and or truthful on the inside to compliment her brother who is evil but very nice.

honestly I think that the reason why apologies and compliments are doing different things is because apologies are essentially making the person, who is apologized to, feel good on the inside and the compliments are making them feel good on the outside, creating this sort of a chain link from Yuuma to the devil

My theory is yuuma sacrificed her sister and the demon took her as a vessel. He either forgot what he did from guilt or he believes he just made her unconscious. It explains her abilities and the reason she doesn't seem to grow at all. Her always telling the truth could be to torment him and drinking of the bodies could be how the demon keeps the corpse from rotting. Also what if chizumi is the one bringing the parents back not yuuma. It would explain a lot more why his parents are beating him under the instruction of chizumi's demon host than him just being a masochist

Have you ever met those fragile people who are secretly malicious and evil but pretend to be pathetic victims to gain simpathy when they are caught?

I think Junji Ito tries to use this boy personality and skills to describe this types of people.

my theory as to why he apologizes is like he is apologizing for potentially inconvienencing the devil with each kill, but that is more half baked than a substantial theory

Yuuma is basically a subversion of the typical junji ito protag/protagonsit of horror stories in general, I feel. at firs the seems to be a harried, tortured soul harrassed by his evil sister who we liely assume is a lair because of how outwardly malicious she is. Add to this how Yuuma acts so timid and apologises so much, making him seem weak willed. But then the twist comes in that HE'S the villain cuasing all this death and suffering and his sister is jsut along for the ride, merely watching him commit his crimes.

As for why they're together, I feel its simple: partlycause Yuuma's a masochist and wants to suffer from hs sister's harassment, but also because Yuuma wants an excuse for his actions (if he isn't in cmplete denial over the fact he's the one cuasing all this trouble, as sometimes it seems he is). He wants his sister to be the blame. He's the one causing all this trouble, it's his sister, he's jsut keeping around in hopes of controlling her.Yeah, that's it. It's not HIS fault, its his sisters, he's the victim. Or so hsi thinking prbably goes.

But that's just my thoughts.

This may be wholly subjective, but when I read this story, it really reminded me of people who apologize but don't mean it. They apologize and never change or make ammends. They don't literally melt you, but if you did they wouldn't give a toss

Maybe Chizumi acts as Yuuma's familiar, she is there to protect him from other dangers, but also she is a demon, so she will bring the doom of him and everyone around him to collect their souls.

I loved reading this story. The whole time it shows the bro as an overly polite victim with a demon possessed sister so the twist of him being the real monster who finds a sick pleasure in melting people was a satisfying conclusion

So Yuuma and Chizumi are like if Arthur and DW Read were the villains in a Japanese horror movie? I mean the brother wears glasses and the sister has the same haircut, the jokes just writes themselves!

Yuuma might simply be a sociopath, someone who doesn't feel guilt nor empathy, but feels pleasure in inflicting the opposite.

Yuuma: Japan's over excessive and insincere appoligies and manner, as a result of generational abuse and culturally rooted historical issues, (he talks to his parents, like he both resent them but also has a deep unexplainable desire to please them and seek their approval)
The people can still talk after melted: Because what the insincere manner destroys is not the personal function, but the sense of humanity, it rips away the fact that people could trust each other to be honest and to work things out together
Chizumi: The people that actually thrives in this system, psychopaths that didn't care about humanity in the first place anyways, it doesn't affect them, because they feed on it (drinking the melted liquid)

Probably the most deaths could be attributed to the Hellstar Remina itself.

I hate the fact that if such a broadcast occurred, I’d be willing to bet that assholes would start sending copies out to people online whenever they’re in an argument.
