A40 - How not to die in a supercar. Arete Supercar - laminating the vertical beam, roll structure

preview_player
Показать описание
Embedded into the rear bulkhead/firewall, are two vertical laminated beams to give our all composite monocoque tub/chassis torsional stiffness and a broad safety margin in the event of a roll over. This video shows the process of laminating the first of many layers that will be needed to form this integral structure. Additionally I deliver a brief discussion about laminating resins and mixing epoxy best practices.

I find it more convenient to pour the hardener (smaller quantity) first, because it's easier to multiply by 4 in my head than it is to multiply by 1.3333, and also because it's easier to be accurate (percentage-wise) when pouring the larger quantity.

You asked about gel coats. We used a lightweight sprayable polyester filler called feather fill as a primer. You catalyzed it like a polyester resin and in about an hour and a half it was ready to sand and it would fill in any small imperfections.

This answers some of my questions about a roll cage or not.

Normally the structure around the windshield is reinforced and I’m very surprised you haven’t used a U shaped steel element running around the windshield and down to the main chassis. Also, I see you intend to directly bind the windshield to the frame and if there is any body flex there is a very high chance the windshield will crack. A really great project though :).

Apart from CAD, Photoshop and carbon fiber, which hadn’t been invented yet, I have been witnessing right here pretty much every step of the design and construction process of racing car prototypes at Porsche in Weissach in the 1960s to bring the 917 to life. Thank you, Sir! In your car I found that you must like the GT40, the Dino and the 917.

Super important thing to consider. :)

corecell is your friend for reinforcing your glass structures.. I've used it in many high load and impact areas. Vinylester is UV resistant, and is much closer to properties of Epoxy.. the best of boat worlds.

for me i would use 12 point cage integral to front section with control arm attachments. then bolt the back assembly to the cockpit cage through the bulkhead bottom middle and top. head ache bar protecting cockpit from engine movement in foward crash. cross bar for 5 point harnesses. for racing they allow .090 wall 1.5" tube. i use .120 wall for safety. some sort of door exbrace is needed.

2 part epoxy and resin manual push stroke volume ratio dispensers are great every time they're good.

You never wear gloves yet your hands always seem clean and unaffected by the resins (apart from that one "nip" from a piece of fibre in one of the vids) - what's your secret?

There is a channel called wjp004 with a man who has been building rallycars for years. He has alot of tips on fibreglass construction for high end vehicles.

Scrapping the sides is important but so is the bottom! Cut your tongue depressors at the end to allow you to properly scrap the bottom.

Aaaah, so many air pockets in the laminate on both sides of the roll bar?

a doubt, wouldn't it be more rigid to put an entire layer making only a few minimum cuts necessary just to better accommodate the layer on the mold?

Why not use carbon fiber bidirectional and uni for those small areas?

I keep wondering how much the finished car will weigh ?

You really need some to show you how to fiberglass properly, your car looks so nice you've done so much work, but you have to many air bubbles in your layer's.
Stop thinking less resin means lighter no less resin means not a good bond .
It's like cement you put steel in cement to keep it together but the cement is the strength like fiberglass you need more resin .and a bloody roller .
I'm not a troll I know what I'm talking about I do this every day for a living .
