My teacher used to say that he almost screwed his voice singing these things, because directors would say he was too little to have a big voice! Hahahahah

He asked Del Monaco once what was his system, and he said "metto la voce alla testa i grito" hahahhahaha

He also showed him some vitamins he would take to keep the body healthy, because his schedule was crazy, and that he was 3 months without sex (because it would screw up his energy and voice for the performance). Golden times!

Modern tenors don't have 1% of Mario's diminuendo. And he is a dramatic tenor ( actually he is THE dramatic tenor).

He recorded the role in 1954 with Protti and Gueden.

Never knew he sang this role! I thought it was a bit too high/lyric for him but it’s really good!

Wow, e poi dicono che non riesce a cantare ruoli lirici... Lui riesce a cantare benissimo il Duca! Evviva MDM! 😍😍💖

This is curious, Del Monaco was a master at Verdi, few tenors can really be compared fairly to him in Otelo, Radamés or Manrico, and although the Duke is clearly not tailor made for him this is a very solvent take on this extraordinarily difficult lyric part, some have said that he did not start as a pure dramatic, but even when young he shows clear dramatic edge, what are your thoughts on this?

I bet he can also sing Nemorino like Caruso
