Did You Know This About Rotary Engines?

Today we are changing the spark plugs on my 2004 Mazda RX-8. Rotary engines needs their spark plugs changed more frequently than a traditional piston engine due to the amount of carbon build up that these spark plugs are subject to. It's also important to know that there are two different spark plugs that are needed for this job. Leading and Trailing plugs are used to hit different heat ranges in the combustion process. Make sure they go in the right spot!

Good tip to keep in mind for anyone that is about to change them yourself for the first time: hand turn until tight and a 1/4 turn with ratchet. Dont crack em like i did.

He replaces spark plugs as often as a diesel owner changes their oil 😂

A redline a day.... seriously my brother got an rx8 for cheap because of engine failure, no power after 5k rpm and it didnt even rev higher. The only thing he did is drive it, aggressively. And now it runs perfect. He also switched to a higher octane fuel (98 instead of 95) later on wich got rid of the last few missfires. Didn't even change the spark plugs.

I work for the auto parts industry selling those parts over the counter. A gentleman came in last week looking for plugs on his newer 5.7 powered Ram truck. Usually people almost fall over when you tell them they need 16 plugs instead of the traditional 8. Nope. This guy wanted the tippy-toppest quality plugs. He ended up walking out that day with almost $250 in plugs alone.

15k isn't too bad really, especially if it's not a daily. My bike wants plugs every 8k and they're $50 for 4. That said, if your only car is rotary powered, spark plugs are probly the least of your worries 😂

Ive had my FC for 5 years now and i was well aware of the extra cost and maintenance yet i loved doing it because there is only a handful of rotories in my state and everyone loves them at car shows. Mine will be back on the road this weekend after a full engine rebuild and full street port.

I saw this, and I still want a rotary. I might be a masochist.

if your sparks are fouling that quickly you either need to run mineral oil, or redline it very often

When I first met my wife she had a 1988 RX7 GXL, NA auto but man it was a fun car. It barely ran when we first started dating so I was like let me do a tune up and see what happens. Ran like a champ after that. We even took it on a road trip or 2 and even saw 21 mpg on the highway a few times. God I miss that thing. Wish we had never sold it.

Rx7 owner here so I have some experience, there not 100$ at all for anyone trying to get into rotaries, almost you’re spending like 45$ if you getting some iridium stuff but the copper is fine too bc it’s ignites better but not lasting as long but regardless you do wanna replace them 1 once a yr basically, or depending on how much you dawg on it. Also you don’t wanna tighten them too much, because you can make the rotor essentially decapitate you’re spark plug so hand tighten then a quarter turn, you can use any sort of thread paste or whatever is called so they don’t thread themselves out and as the video states don’t forget it’s two different sets of plugs. Love the rx8, keep at it

Taking your wheel off to change your sparkplugs isn't normal... But on rotaries, it is.

With my FC, changing the spark plugs was super easy. Easier than my preludes spark plugs.

Rotaries are engineering Marvels. They should be kept living 😍

I have found because of the previous owner of my rx8 that it wont trash the engine putting the plugs in the wrong place. They had both leading plugs in the front rotor and both trailing in the rear rotor. Least it didnt trash mine.

This low-key killed any desire I had for a rotary despite how cool I still think they are😂😂

Another reason they foul very fast, especially in the series one is because premix can foul the sparkplugs as well due to them being constantly coated in oil. Series 2 is a bit bettter because they have an extra oil injector in each rotor. Oil can foul spark plugs as well as carbon, rotaries are especially prone to premature sparkplug wear because the oil is injected into the conbustion chamber.

I had one at the age of 16-18 most fun ever. I had 157, 000 on original motor. Most miles I've ever seen. but blew the side seals.
