Cable impedance is the thing most new lighting guys/gals miss. DMX/RS-485 is spec'd to 120 Ohm cable, while standard audio XLR is 75 Ohm. 120 Ohm is made for square data signals, 75 is for sine waves and can cause your nice square waves to get distorted into rounded leaded and trailed edge signals.

Hey David, Thank You, this was very simple for me, so I'm grateful for that. I have a situation where I don't have smart fixtures, only old school fresnels, lekos and cans, 4 of each to be exact. However, they are connected to dimmer packs which are addressable, they each have four outlets, and dmx in & out connectors. How would you go about addressing non-smart fixtures, on an ADJ DMX-512, 8 Scene board?

This is a silly question, but I'm a rookie in DMX lighting. I've been asked to purchase and operate DMX lights for my church. How would I connect the DMX cables to the board if I'm about 100 feet at the back of the house--not as close as you stand by your lights in the video? Can I mix PARs and DMX on the same truss?

I have a chauvet r1 rogue beam and another smaller chauvet light (intimidator spot 260) the bigger one keeps glitching and going slowly in dmx. Apparently it wont run by itself, and only in DMX
