Join me as we discuss the news that Square Enix has reportedly lost 2 billion dollars in value after the release of Final Fantasy 16 and why the topic is much more nuanced than presented by IGN.

*Apologies for the low humming noise you might hear in the background. My microphone is on it's last legs and unfortunately is making a rather annoying sound.

Nope, Avengers and Forspoken are the ones to blame. They're using FF16 as a scapegoat.

As long as they survive long enough to complete the FF7 remake trilogy, that will do me.
FF16 was pretty good, but similar to what was said in the video, looking at it in hindsight, it's not too special.
To turn it around, just like how FF1-10 were different takes on turn based comabt foundations, square really needs to lean into the FF7R combat system and use that as the foundation of all Final Fantasy games combat in the future.

Not sure why FF16 should take the blame for that.
Its not a super great game, but its sure a step up from XV's train-wreck of broken promises and cut content thanks to corporate greed.

If they are losing money now, its not due to the most recent game, but due to losing goodwill from the buyers and consequences from moronic choices over the past years.

Let alone FF16 is exclusive to PlayStation atm, so OF COURSE its not going to make much money if its restricted to a single platform.

FF16 has amazing graphics and been told a solid story. The losses could be due to being Playstation exclusive, however there is potential for other console release in the future.

The FF7R gameplay truly is perfect. Easily my favorite gameplay of any game all time

Oh the side-quest system was my only real complaint of XVI. Get through some major plot developments to stop and go seek out the twenty or so side-quests that just popped up on your map. I didn't like it at all.

I haven't gotten XVI yet because I don't have a PS5 to play it on. I haven't heard if it's come out on PC yet.

no one should want microsoft or any big studio to buy out square, it NEVER is a good thing to lose 3rd parties just for the sake of brand absorption
the issue square has is FF isn't FF its broad appeal game trying to get the biggest audience in the skin of FF iconography, no one really wants that except casuals that don't care or sheeps that buy any big budget graphic games

even FF7R combat isn't a perfect blend, the only thing FF7R shows is that combat should be its own brand and even then

FF lacks brand recognition as they keep changing, why care

Been a long time fan of final fantasy sense ff7 on ps1 played 8, 9, and 10 and 15 and now going threw 16 I love all these games I enjoy ff7 remake just wish they didn't change so much of it but I'll admit I love the game play on all of them turn base is great and love the new ones too and 16 is now consider my 2nd best ff games I've played the devil may cry feel of 16 makes the combat more like a fighting game but fun and cool to pull off same as turn base is cool how you can make crazy builds to 1 shot bosses and all ff games have very deep and dark and heart touching stories I don't want Square Enix to struggle because I seen there possibly from past and present and I want them to succeed and as the video ask im hoping Sony will but just let Square Enix do what they do best plus there movies are pretty dam cool

FF16 trash ain't interested on a copy-paste devil may cry.the fact that ff16 company spoke up about that it was inspired from Devil may cry. FF ain't really should be saying stuff like that. FF15 gave enough content and better gameplay from swaping characters during combat sessions. Fan Favorite tune up music to select when driving throughout the open world. Many activities things to explore. The way u engage on many side quest is literally up to u. I don't really care the fact how much it was added it provided a better add on content
Then this landfill of dispose Garbage look at FF7 and Rebirth one of the best RPG Mechanics. That's truly a love letter.
This devs from ff16 got no Talent gameplay is all gud. But the game Hides it low budget from special effects and camera angles.

Aside from that
I still love Marvel's avengers it really needed more characters more hive base which would've include more fan favorite rogue Galleries from the Marvel's universe. Cut loading times more add on support.which lot of costumes/Skins/ I did not like Ironman having a War Machine that deserves a new character which im disappointed still.

Forspoken ain't gonna waste my time or anyone's minutes of writing this. The game should've never existed.

i think JRPGs are a niche genre in the West and in Japan, non-mobile/Switch game sales are declining

I've been playing RPGs since what older gen gamers would call "The Golden Age" of RPGs, 1996 - 1999 or even 2004, and I understand that some titles need to evolve a bit to bring in fresh blood, but c'mon, the demographic still shows that most gamers are now in their late thirties, early to mid forties. Fast twitch, action games can be a lot of fun, but to turn a franchise never known for it being an action game into that from turn based, or even ATB semi-turn/active time combat? That's what killed it for me with FFXVI. I don't have the same level of fast twitch reaction that many of the younger generation do. I'll admit it. I love the DMC franchise, and understand that I'm gonna get trashed at points, but I knew what I was getting into from the start. Final Fantasy XVI just nuked the RPG elements except for the usually poorly executed ones (I.E. Fetch Quests, thank the gods there wasn't really an Escort Quest . . . ). We've gotten to the point where the graphics of games are so good now, that trying to push beyond that is honestly pretty moot. Therefore, so much gets put into "graphics" that most of the other qualities that truly make a "good game" by GAMER standards, NOT Business Standards aka Short Term, high Profits, kill the project and move on to new project, rinse and repeat ad infinitum/ad nauseum, get lost in the shuffle. AKA, quality control of story if it is supposed to have one. RPG's??? Are supposed to have good story. I saw little of that in FFXVI. DMC had a better story, even the bad DMC Devil May Cry that isn't anything like OG DMC had a better story. Voice actors only will do what they're paid to do and if that means reading a terrible script . . . welp . . . they were doing their job. Solid Gameplay? Iffy and spotty for far too many games nowadays. Buggy? AHEM . . . again, too many games at launch b/c they get rushed b/c the corpo ladder's impatience. Do I think 10 years is too long? YES, but y'know what? Probably wouldn't have taken that long if you didn't try to make the world photo-realistic. The problem is multifold and not just the CEOs of companies, who many of which I'll bet are not even gamers. But developers and director's who have a grand vision, but aren't kept on something of a leash and focus. Not saying Yoshi-P is terrible, nor am I saying he's perfect, but some calls made probably did nothing to help this situation.

Sorry for the long rant. But I feel that there may be more gamers out there who feel this way too.

FFVIIR should be the blueprint for future Final Fantasy games. It's a perfect mix between classic and modern FFs, it stays a JRPG, a Japanese game.
Enough with westernization of the franchise to attract more mainstream western gamers. That almost killed your company. People play JRPGs because they're JRPG, not because they want Game of Throne BS.
