Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy

Deep Purple guitarist and founding band member Ritchie Blackmore has called their classic "Perfect Strangers", his favorite song by the band.

The tune was distinct from their other songs due to the fact that it was one of the few tunes they did without a guitar solo.

Inspired by the book Elric, the lyrics were written by Blackmore, Ian Gillan, and Roger Glover and the song was released off of the album of the same name.

The album itself was the band's eleventh studio album and went on to be the most successful album after the band reformed with the lineup that was dubbed "Mark II".

It went on to reach number 5 in the UK charts and number 12 on the US Billboard 200 as well as reaching platinum status.

I'll be taking on the tune for today's vocal demonstration and I hope you enjoy my version of the song. Please be sure to share how you thought I did in the comments!

listened to it 3 times now lol..I notice the nuances more and more each time lol. You really captured the soulful type of sound of IAN GILLAN. Love how you went a step further and carried those notes a tad longer. I just shared this with my Army kid. He will love this version of it. God Bless.

Best thing about ken: he doesn't kill himself to hit supernatural high notes...

01:03 At this one you mixedb all the best from the stars: starts Ian Gillan and ends with Coverdale style passing quickly tru Glenn Hughes and maybe a Dio feel... Great job. My first gig as a vocalist in a school festival was performing Perfect Strangers. I was so nervous since i was just a bad guitarrist in other band. The deep purple fans in school, who had lost their singer, saw me singing as a joke inn my bands rehearsal break and asked to fill in. Everything went ok but i was alnost peeing on my pants before going up stage haha

It's incredible how we've come to accept the "fact" that singers just start to lose their voice with age, yet here I am coming to Ken's video expecting nothing but perfection because he has shattered all my preconceptions of how voice and age work... Hats off, Ken!

Quite possibly the best performance I've ever heard from Ken Tamplin.

That was the usual unbelievable vocals.

I saw Deep Purple do this from my VIP seats at the Paramount in Seattle last fall. Nice job. I have fun memories of this song. Back around 1990 I was doing a computer system conversion at a client site in a town in Wyoming. I was working overtime, six days a week, where they played country music over the PA system non-stop. I found the Deep Purple Perfect Strangers album on a cassette at a store, and it was one of the tapes I'd plug into my rental car's stereo after work to "clean my brain" after 8 to 12 hours of straight country music.
