*Driving on a highway and passing a billboard*

“What- what the hell- what the hell is that-“

As someone who lived in the South, going up to New England for the first time was insane to me, with zero billboards anywhere and actual nice forests and fresh air. It was great.

Dear lord, what I wouldn't give for that to be the norm

I loving this goth Betty Boop looking character, and the noir-esque music in the background.

This just makes me realize that if we had less corporate shilling and advertisements, everyone’s towns would look so much better. Would be better for our mental health too honestly.

That's bizarre to me, no wonder Stephen King writes Maine like it's some kinda other world separate from the United States. I'm from the south where EVERYTHING is corporate

The thing about Maine at least, once upon a time, was *majorly* in the Logging industry, hence why there's so much forest in the state. Because counterintuitively, logging companies - and businesses that rely on them like paper - do not want to completely deforest everything, otherwise they go out of business.

Charmin, the toilet paper company, plants millions of trees every year.

Understandable that there are no large corporations in Maine. A large multifaceted entity that breaks the will and mind of people wouldn't like to be crowded by all the eldritch beings in Maine.

I grew up in Massachusetts and we’re a lot less regimented about this, but there are some choice restrictions - automatic billboards (the led ones that change) are illegal, towns have strict upper limits on liquor licenses (plus a ban on happy hour statewide), and people grumble and gripe when a new fast food restaurant is being built. All that said, the more northern New England states are a lot more restrictive and that’s what makes road trips and vacations so much fun!

She’s completely right. There are laws that limiy how tall you can build a building because if they were to tall it would block the beautiful mountains

I live in Vermont and we also have a ban on Billboards.

Where i live it took Walmart 20 years to convince my city to put in a Walmart and even then it had restrictions like it couldn't be a superstore and wasnt allowed to sell fresh produce or have a deli.

Every time I cross into New Hampshire and see billboards i'm like "oh right...damn this sucks"

Holy shit. I've seen a bunch of your content before, never would have guessed. It's great to see a fellow Mainer.

It all comes with the price of freezing your ass off every winter 🤣

The Mc Donald’s one reminds me of the deal that they had to make in Sedona Az, where they couldn’t use the Golden Arches because it would distract from the landscape

To be clear, you need to go North of Connecticut and West of Boston to find that part of New England. Everything between New York City and Boston is pretty much a super corporate suburban hell.

Texas here. We started out with a balance of Americana signs, billboards, etc., but now it's just full-on tech grifters, corporate Kool-Aid drinking, and DO WE NEED THIS MANY BUC-EE'S BILLBOARDS?! 😂

Want things to get even more interesting? Two towns north of Portland in Freeport and Pownal, there’s a natural sand dune in the middle of the woods people call the Desert of Maine.

As a Vermonter this is not far off for us either, Vermont has a ban on billboards.

Honestly a lot of New England has similar laws like that for the natural preservation

As a person in maine i see that as a win to have a big content creator from the state, thank you
