Terrifying Theory:

All the humans who put on the headset have their consciousnesses uploaded, but they aren’t immediately “used” by the program.

There can only ever be six characters in the circus at a time. Each time one abstracts, a new consciousness is pulled from the saved data and a new character is introduced.

Pomni’s original human form may have put on the headset a long while ago, but her consciousness didn’t fully transfer into the Circus until Kaufmo abstracted.

I feel like this is the wrong interpretation. Instead of “Kaufmo wouldn’t have extracted without Pomni”, I would’ve said “Pomni would have never gone to the circus without Kaufmo abstracting”. I’d argue that theory makes more sense
