I'm sorry for everyone who lost their job over this. D&D needs a new caretaker...

"bit of a self-inflicted wound"?? that's an understatement. This company is begging to be abandoned by traditional customers.

Make something no one wants, go broke

Holy cow - this was a cornerstone of their digital walled garden strategy to lock everyone into D&DB.

The brand must bottom out and yield no ROI, pass on to another caretaker, and then be reborn.

Realistically, I would not be surprised if Project Sigil just died because of the competition. It doesn't even matter how good a new VTT is, swapping to a new one is really hard, especially on the DM.

Better car video than J Scott Garibray could ever make.

Talespire already filled the niche for a 3D battlemap for RPGs. And it is not confined to D20 or medieval fantasy for that matter.

WOTC is out of touch on every single aspect of D&D at this point. While Sigil my have had some impressive aspects, A sizeable portion of players would not even have the ability to run it. Here is some insight from a DM that runs quite a few of online games: If you have 6 players in a group and one of those players is on a crappy 15 year old dell, That means NO PLAYER in that group is going to be on that app for that group. Not to mention the experience you get is overwhelmingly dependent on the DM and has little to do with what you are using to play.

Let's be honest here. I can only speak for myself, but as a forever GM who enjoys creating visually appealing maps, the amount of time required to produce something I'm truly satisfied with in Project Sigil would easily triple compared to using a straightforward 2D map tool like DungeonFog, which I'm currently using. On top of that, from the earliest reveal footage of Project Sigil, I felt somewhat intimidated by the sheer volume of additional content I'd need to purchase just to create maps I'd be proud to introduce to my players.

Not my game, not my monkeys and definitely not my circus.

Well they released it BUT you couldn't even check it out UNLESS a Paid Subscription DM was hosting as far as I can tell. Basically they could have let everyone look at the free stuff BUT they didn't. There was ALSO the super complicated layers of sign in where some of my fellow gamers STILL can't signed into it.

It was a gamble to try and bring this business model to a D&D milieu consisting of older players used to paper and pencil play, and newer players with no money and expect results.

Honestly I thought it was a cool idea, but there wasn't enough there. i would have loved if they had premade campaigns or something. A downside to VTTs is the amount of work it takes to set stuff up

waiting for official confirmation of this since Project Sigil isn't even out yet. It just went in to open beta. Its actually pretty solid but I have major concerns. My tables would never be able to use it because of system requirements and as of the beta it doesn't fully integrate with D&D beyond. You can't use any customized content really. And I just can't see people migrating unless it REALLY offers appeal to dm's like me. Its a shame cause it does some things really well.

The problem here is the licensing, it is too restrictive, to invasive, and too expensive. It was just poorly marketed in the market research was wrong about what people wanted and would put up with.

If D&D had better people looking after it and hadn't flushed the majority of their player base, their VTT might have been successful. It looked pretty cool.
