Hans Moke Niemann is an American chess grandmaster and Twitch streamer. He was awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE on January 22, 2021. In July 2021, he won the World Open chess tournament in Philadelphia. Niemann first entered the Top 100 Junior players list at position 88 on March 1, 2019.

Is Hans Niemann Cheating? - Hans Niemann vs Magnus Carlsen -

In the third round of the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, Niemann defeated Carlsen again with the black pieces, playing the Nimzo-Indian Defence. Niemann's live rating surpassed 2700 for the first time with this win. Carlsen withdrew from the Cup the next day, announcing his decision in a cryptic tweet containing a video of Portuguese football manager José Mourinho saying: "If I speak I'm in big trouble, and I don't want to be in big trouble." While Carlsen himself made no direct claims, his tweet along with the ramped up security measures at the tournament the day after his loss implied there was an accusation that Niemann was cheating over the board, an accusation denied by Niemann and several commentators.

The executive director of the St. Louis Chess Club, Tony Rich, said in a statement, "A player's decision to withdraw from a tournament is a personal decision, and we respect Magnus' choice." Rich later elaborated that no formal complaint was made in writing. Chief Arbiter Chris Bird published a statement affirming that there was "no indication that any player has been playing unfairly" during the tournament. Bird's statement did not address the reason to add additional security measures after Magnus' withdrawal.

A statistical analysis of Niemann's games since 2020, including the Sinquefield Cup game between Carlsen and Niemann, by anti-cheating expert Ken Regan saw no evidence of cheating.

Why are you in different positions? We are creatures of habit. This has totally messed me up. I might have to cry.

If I was ever in a bind and needed a friend Mark is the one I would call. If I was being physically threatened I would call Greg and Chase. If I needed a cynic to hire a babysitter Scott is the one I would call. Y’all each have desirable traits and make a stellar team. Keep it up!!!

"I got an attack" is a common way for chessplayers to say they created an attack, not something they received. We chessplayers are sometimes not so exact with words. For example "opening theory". Theory = idea, but we look at already played moves, not ideas. Great video. Keep up the good work. Love the panel.

The fact that he never denies cheating against Magnus directly is pretty striking. I hadn't noticed that before.

The funny thing is the entire behavior panel assumes Hans knows what he is talking about. The truth is, his post game analysis is actually one of the main criticisms when people say his games are suspicious.

Can’t see him doing something that could threaten his career? Come on now. People do it ALL THE TIME. They cheat, have affairs, ruin their families, gamble all away in casinos, commit white collar crime, etc. In the game of life, and no disrespect meant to the chess community, he’s not all that special, he’s fallable just like the rest of us. Let’s not put him on a pedestal.

As one of the 200 people who's been following this drama in the chess world, I am absolutely ecstatic about your breakdown. And I will share your analysis in the community.

As someone who plays chess, has been a member of a chess club, and has read many books on chess, saying "I got an attack" is perfectly normal language, said and written by virtually everyone.

In addition, making moves based on intuition, is, again, perfectly normal.

I think he gave himself up in the last clip. He says his teacher suggests he's not good. This could be because he in fact isn't that good. Compared to people like magnus of course. He then says he would do anything to prove them wrong and that he lives on spite. With those things layered on top of this story, shows me motivation for cheating. He had a rough childhood so taking any advantage you can get is common place for him. He may have done so here as well.

Hi guys
I have a lot to say about your assessments.

#1. You really should take on board some of the criticisms leveled at you that you are not sufficiently familiar with the chess world and so you interpret things improperly. The standout example is the "I got an attack" phrase... this is simply how a tournament player will state the way a game played out.

#2 Nieman is rated at 2699... in other words he is the 40th strongest player in the World. Although it is to be expected Carlsen would dominate in a series of games it is also true that Nieman should win on some occasions. Chase emphasizes that at no stage does Nieman categorically deny cheating... however, Nieman does say straight out "then right when I beat Magnus" (1:45:47) there is nothing equivocal about this statement.

#3. Scott "a cheater is a cheater".... you formed this assessment very early on and then that becomes a filter for anything else you might see. Is it possible Nieman has cheated more often than he admits... yes. But that is not the point. Did he cheat in his game against Carlsen is the sole issue here.

#4. The long segment in which Nieman displays his anger does not diminish in intensity as Scott claims. The intensity is maintained right up to the point where Nieman then states he is being honest in which the tone moderates briefly but is entirely in keeping with the context of what he is saying in those moments (1:46:00) but when he returns to the accusations being made (1:47:40) that level of anger returns with full force.

#5. The disjointed speech where he doesn't complete sentences is entirely consistent with the highly emotional state he is in. When he states how much time he has put into chess that will be completely true. The chess community is not a large one and he is at risk of being ostracized. Nieman has developed a self identity around being a top level player. It seems to me to be a value judgement is being applied against him that, in the situation he finds himself, because he does not complete his sentences this implies something about his veracity.

#6 The criticism about his self description of being an intuitive player is way out of line. It is only because a person reaches a certain level of skill and understanding of the game that intuition starts to become a part of a person's play. Very often a competent player knows what the best move might be almost immediately but then will spend time calculating moves to confirm their initial thoughts. The game involves pattern recognition and forward planning... very often there are only a few moves which are important to consider in the context of a game plan.

#7 Mark makes an early comment about Nieman's description of his thinking when dealing with a "transposition". Marks comments are completely misguided. A transposition is when one series of opening moves arrives at a position normally achieved by an entirely different move order. It is an example where the behaviour team were talking out of their depth and making incongruous judgements.

This episode was fun. Don’t understand chess, but Hans was very entertaining. My favourite video so far, as nobody had to die.

His biggest problem is that a Grand Masters remember every move or every game they ever played. For him to say he wasn’t sure or didn’t remember something is enough deception for me

Teacher here. I see someone on the spectrum who's translating across several languages on the fly.

Claimed he deleted his social media, but somehow has "seen thousands of comments." He claims he's willing to live with the results of his earlier cheating, but these are the results - neverending scrutiny. The kid has proven himself to be of questionable integrity, and doesn't seem to get why he's considered untrustworthy. His interview ramblings combined with his inability/refusal to discuss his own chess eloquently make it hard to believe nothing is up.

What an amazing conversation! I have a new favorite channel. A few things:

a)Damnit there are 106 of us not 105!

b)I have two friends who have either played him or seen him in action when he was younger. One of them said to me, “There’s always been a dark cloud hanging over him.”
c) At this point there is probably a majority in the chess world that thinks he did cheat in this specific game but officials are still trying to figure out how.
d) Typically a cheat will simply input the position on a cell phone in the bathroom and then come back out with the computer’s top move. Even at the lower levels (like mine) we’re getting “wanded” for phones and other electronics at the bigger events.
e) Believe it or not there is actually quite a bit of intuition in chess. Even at the highest levels there are moves “that feel right.” And I would definitely trust Carlsen’s intuition about Niemann’s demeanor at the board. Carlsen is the best in the world and he knows even the handful of players who can hang with him would be agonizing over some of those critical positions.
f)Sadly, there is no concrete proof at the moment that he cheated in this specific game but this analysis of his body language was so informative!
g)As Mr. 105 said, “A cheat, is a cheat is a cheat.”

So he says he cheated when he was young when he was 16. Then later he says when he cheated when he was young it was when he was living in New York doing during the height of the pandemic which would’ve been 2020 so that means he cheated two years ago. That’s not a long time ago and not when you were young. It’s different if you’re 25 or 30 but when you’re 18 you don’t say I was young when I cheated 2 years ago when I was 16. It’s almost like saying I cheated yesterday but I won’t do it today
