Willow Project
Показать описание
Big news: The United States government approved the controversial Willow project in Alaska. It is the largest proposed oil drilling project on U.S. federal lands in decades.
How much oil are we talking about? 🤔 This oil and gas extraction project is predicted to produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil per day. That's around 1.5% of the total oil production in the U.S. The project's proponent, ConocoPhillips Alaska, proposed five drilling sites. Extracting the oil could produce more than 263 million tons of greenhouse gases over 30 years, equal to the combined emissions from 1.7 million passenger cars over the same time period.
The project sparked major opposition. Communities located near the project site, the Native Village of Nuiqsut, expressed their disapproval. Along with the project's fruition comes developments of hundreds of oil wells, 400 miles of roads and pipelines, disturbances, and pollution for the people and ecosystems in the area.
"Today's decision completely contradicts not only the administration's climate goals, but also its commitment to consider Traditional Ecological Knowledge in federal policy making," said Jade Begay, director of Policy and Advocacy at NDN Collective. "The Native Village of Nuiqsut has repeatedly voiced their concerns around how the project will impact local ecosystems - including caribou, which they rely on for subsistence."
What do you think about the tradeoff between approving the project, and passing other environmental protections? Let us know in the comments!
