Greek painter Pericles Vyzantios, who died on February 9, 1972, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris (1911-1917). He portrayed events from the Greek-Turkish War in Asia Minor, but those paintings were lost during the Greek army's retreat. Vyzantios co-founded the 'Techni' group and chaired the Association of Greek Painters. In 1934, he established Athens' first private painting school with Aleka Stylou-Diamantopoulou. He played a role in organizing the art club Atelier and participated in international exhibitions. Vyzantios, known for urban scenes early in his career, later focused on landscapes. Besides painting, he worked as a caricaturist and stage designer at the National Theatre of Greece.

To honour Pericles Vyzantios’ life and work we have chosen the artwork ‘At a Paris Bar’, c. 1914-1915, from the Greek Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery.
