Do not turn your car on, put your emergency brake on, turn your ignition key to the second position, that would be the position just before the car turns on. Now you should be able to just put your car into reverse and the lights will come on without risking running yourself or someone else over.

man, he is butchering those wires!  The esiest way to test that kinda sealed up socket would be to remove the bulb & test the terminals threw the socket. Without stabing the wires.

If you have "old school bulb" and are confused by what is "+" and what is "-" simply remove the bulb and use a test meter on the terminals. (remove "filament back-feed" by removing the filament!)
