Will 5G be sufficient for connected cars? Ben Volkow, Otonomo’s CEO, believes 5G is sufficient to support the needs.

Otonomo works with OEMs (car manufacturers) on how to optimize the data flow. This is also something that we believe will help to make sure that the coverage of 5G is enough in order to really support the masses of gigabytes of data that are being collected from the vehicles.

Some optimization are things like making the data flow from the vehicle dynamic. For instance if a certain data set is needed in the smart city, transmit it when the car is in the smart city. If the car leaves the city and travels to the mountains maybe the data is not needed. Or adjust the data flow from the car based on the subscribed services. If the driver has given consent to share the data for predictive maintenance services, or concierge services, only send the relevant parameters.

I believe that with the right optimization 5G coverage will be sufficient.
