What causes excessive blinking of eyes? - Dr. Samina F Zamindar

The commonest cause of excessive blinking of the eyes is dryness in the eyes. This is the way in which the eyes are telling you that they are thirsty. They need some more tears because with every blink, a new consignment of tears flows into your eyes and it nourishes the cornea. Why does the cornea needs nourishment by tears? Yes, it does need nourishment only by tears because the cornea does not have any blood supply. Well my friends, didn’t you always think that only when you cry, tears roll down? No. There is always a layer of tears in the eye which nourishes the cornea and whatever reason it might be, which causes a depletion of tear film, your eyes need to blink again and again to see that your cornea gets nourished, because the cornea of the eye is the most important structure of the eye and a very important role it plays to give you clear vision. This being said, I would like to now say that there are other causes also of recurrent blinking of the eyes, for example, any allergy of the eyes or any irritant entering into your eyes because this is the only way in which the eye can get that out. So many times in my practice, I see children who come with the complaint that they are blinking very often. Parents get really worried. After I have done a complete thorough check up of their eyes, and I don’t find any reason for their excessive blinking, then the most commonest reason would be an attention seeking behavior. This child is feeling neglected. And he or she wants the attention of their parent. Well, then we are talking about a deep psychological problem for which a counselor as to be enrolled. Some children who have a refractive error, that means they need to wear spectacles to see clearly, they come to us with a complaint of excessive blinking. So when we examine them, we find out that they might need to wear a glass and soon as we give them the correct refractive correction, in the form of spectacles, the blinking disappears.

It's not attention seeking...people aren't aware when they blink too much due to stress. It's because your heart beats really fast and it's because of emotional abuse. Parents like this probably don't know how to reassure their kids. I only realised it when a girl imitated me and asked the teacher why people do that and the whole class looked around right at me.

Here’s what I’m doing to help me stop blinking: count in ur head till 7 then blink and keep doing that over and over again and try get used to it.

It could also be muscle tension around the eyes, they blink to releave muscle tension around the eyes like the forehead and temples. Try putting muscle relaxant on the forehead and temples. Also take frequent naps to take pressure off the muscles. Notice you don't blink as much when you wake up in the morning.

My eyes though doesn't blink by themselves. I had to make them blink, because everytime I feel like my eyebrows are stuck with themselves, and it creates anxiety which in turn makes me blink my eyes constantly. I don't blink every time though. But sometimes i just can't control and it's just frustrating. I'm afraid that I might have OCD.

It's so weird. Sometimes when I remember that I used to excessively blink and clench my eyes, I START DOING IT AGAIN! I also make those odd noises. People just tell me it's just a habit... though sometimes i am concerned

I sometime get a weird feeling in either one of my eyes or both it's often hard to tell, but it makes me really want to blink very hard, like push my eye lids and just gnug them with my hands to make the feeling disapear. But i know it isn't just something wrong with my eyes, because which eye it is depends on my social surrounding. If there is a person sitting to the left of me in class, then it's most likely that the feeling gets to my right eye because my brain knows that person might think i'm weird if they see my eye blinking towards them. I also sometimes just turn my head around and blink, so that noone in my surrounding thinks i'm winking to them.
